Less is more at The Original Factory Shop

The Original Factory Shop was established back in 1969, with a commitment to bringing big brands for all the family at factory shop prices. Growing considerably since then, The Original Factory Shop has kept its founding values at heart and is still committed to supplying the best quality products at the lowest possible prices.

Constantly looking for new opportunities and products, The Original Factory Shop manages the end-to-end supply chain for all products and stores from their North West Distribution Centre. The centre, located in Burnley, services the needs of all their, ever expanding, 200 plus stores.

Processing 18,000 products per week, the need for effective utilisation of space and physical movement of product is key. Back in 2010/11 The Original Factory Shop invested in a 100,000sq ft warehouse extension where they, for the first time, sought the expertise of Rack-N-Stak, who designed and installed a new Apex narrow aisle racking system specifically for articulated forklifts. Once in operation, The Original Factory Shop turned their attention to maximising the productivity and efficiency of their materials handling fleet. It was at this point that Rack-N-Stak’s expertise was called upon once again.

Initially The Original Factory Shop had 20 trucks in operation, some of which were on short-term hire, however after a detailed site survey and gaining a thorough understanding of the operational requirements, Rack-N-Stak made a number of recommendations, including a significant reduction in the size of the fleet.

10 new Bendi Articulated trucks have been supplied on a fully inclusive rental agreement together with a number of STILL EXU powered pallet trucks, standard hand pallet trucks and a STILL RX70 for use outdoors. To compliment the fleet, Rack-N-Stak also supplied a Hako Sweeper and Scissor Lift.

The Original Factory Shop run a multi-shift operation, so the emphasis was on truck availability throughout the various shifts, hence the recommendation to create a "pit stop" battery change area consisting of battery frames and charger units above the batteries to eliminate any damage. The battery cases were each fitted with ‘fork pockets’ to ensure the safe and efficient handling of the batteries during the changeovers.

The new fleet, together with the additional space created by the smaller charging bay has certainly made a recognisable difference according to Jo Bailey, Logistics General Manager

"Our first dealing with Rack-N-Stak was when they designed and supplied the racking system for our new warehouse extension" commented Jo. "From day one, Rack-N-Stak instilled confidence with their approach of wanting to work closely with our team and gain a thorough understanding of our needs. With their collaboration we introduced a multi-shift battery change system that meant we could not only considerably reduce the size of our fleet, but replace with new machines and still save money".

Rather than just supplying forklift trucks, Rack-N-Stak are committed to looking at the bigger picture and providing total warehouse solutions for their customers. It was this commitment and drive that helped them provide the complete solution for The Original Factory Shop. The overall work included:

  • An APEX Racking System – for the new warehouse extension
  • Bendi Articulated Forklifts – all with spare batteries
  • STILL RX70-22 LPG Forklift – for use outdoors
  • STILL EXU Powered Pallet Truck – 2 new walk behind trucks for general warehouse duties
  • Hako Sweeper – general duties
  • 40FT Scissor Lift – general duties
  • Battery Frame and Charging Unit – to allow for multi-shift operation

Rack-N-Stak has now completed the replacement of the entire materials handling fleet at The Original Factory Shop. All of the trucks are on contract hire with full service included.
